AuSKM Journal

The AuSKM Online Journal of Knowledge Management (The Journal) is a peer-reviewed journal devoted to providing perspectives on topics relevant to Knowledge Management and associated areas such as, Intellectual Capital, Innovation, Organisational Learning or Complexity.

The Journal is an online journal that publishes articles and papers that contribute to the development of both the theory and practice of Public Sector Knowledge Management, and associated areas.

Initially The Journal will publish refereed papers presented at the annual AuSKM Conference.  These papers are reviewed by the Editor and those selected for inclusion are submitted for peer review by members of the Editorial Board.
Aims and Scope:
The journal publishes work including research papers and case studies, that discuss Public Sector Knowledge Management, and associated areas.

Research Papers:
These may be completed research findings or works in progress.

Case Studies:
Case studies illustrating practice in the field of knowledge management and associated areas.

In time, these categories may be expanded to include conference reviews, book reviews, viewpoints too long to be included in the online forum, and edited and compiled debates or discussion threads from the online forum.
Editorial Quality
The refereeing process for publication in the Journal is a rigorous measure of the quality of content.  Our goal for this process is focused on helping all authors to prepare their papers for eventual publication in the journal.  Our aim is that all authors who submit papers are accepted as members of the Journal's community.  To this end, reviews are richly developed, helpful, and respectful of author’s ideas.

Authors are invited to revise their work to the standards required by the referee reports they receive.  We believe all authors have merit; however on occasion authors require help to develop their ideas.  We prefer that authors work collaboratively with their reviewers to help them to bring out the best in their work.  Indeed, some papers may have excellent content, but may be poorly expressed in English - in the case, for instance, of authors whose first language is not English.  In this situation, a rewrite should be arranged by the author themselves, preferably using an experienced editor.

In all instances, reviewers’ comments are passed anonymously to the authors.

The Editorial Board will work with authors until submissions are of appropriate quality and relevance to the subject area.  The editor is happy to discuss contributions before submission.
Submission Guidelines
Papers should be between 2,000 and 5,000 words in length.  They should be written as continuous expository narrative in a chapter or article style, not as lists of points or a PowerPoint™ presentation.  Submitted papers must be in English, and be thoroughly checked and proofread before submission, by both the author and a critical editor.  Do not submit a verbatim transcript of your oral presentation.

Manuscripts should be single spaced and should include, in the following order:
  1. cover sheet, title (as short as possible),
  2. abstract (approximately 100 to 250 words),
  3. keywords (up to 10 words or phrases),
  4. introduction,
  5. text,
  6. acknowledgements,
  7. references and notes.

The cover sheet should include the title; author’s name, address and e-mail address and university affiliation(s) (if applicable); biographical notes for each author should also be included (approximately 100 words, maximum 150).

Tables and Figures
  • Tables and figures should be placed where they are to appear in the paper.
  • Colour may be used.

Preparation of Articles
The author can use their preferred referencing style, as long as it is used consistently and to the appropriate standards.  Spelling can vary according to national usage, but should be internally consistent.  All authors are encouraged to have their text proofread by a copy editor before submission.  Poor use of English grammar may lead to rejection.

Author’s Check List
  1. Have you told readers, at the outset, what they might gain by reading your paper?
  2. Have you made the aim of your work clear?
  3. Have you explained the significance of your contribution?
  4. Does your contribution align with the themes and objectives of AuSKM?
  5. Have you set your work in the appropriate context by giving sufficient background (including a complete set of relevant references) to your work?
  6. What have others said about this problem/issue?
  7. Have you addressed the question of practicality and usefulness?
  8. Have you identified future developments that may result from your work?
  9. What are the potential contributions for theory and practice?
  10. If the paper concerns formal research, at what stage are you in your research?  How do you plan to complete your research (methodology, analysis methods, etc.)?
  11. Have you structured your paper in a clear and logical fashion?

The Submission Process:
The submission process will be given in the Call for Papers some months prior to the annual conference.  In general, it will follow the steps of:
  • Call for abstracts
  • Abstract review
  • Notification of acceptance or rejection
  • Submission of full paper
  • Refereeing
  • Return of referee reports
  • Revision, if required
  • Presentation at conference
  • Publication

The Publication Process:
  1. Once your paper is received, your identity and contact details are removed; the paper is matched to two appropriate referees and then sent for review.  You will be notified via email when the paper is received and sent to referees.
  2. When referee reports are returned, they are sent back to you with the referees’ identities removed.
  3. Papers are converted to PDF, with proofs returned to the author for review.
  4. Papers are published in electronic format in the Journal.

Publishing Agreement
Presenters are not obliged to publish in The Journal nor the conference proceedings.  However, if you do decide to take this option, publication will be based on the following publishing agreement:
  • This agreement is between the author(s) of the submitted work and the AuSKM Online Journal of Knowledge Management.  The Journal will publish this work in electronic format, separately and/or in a collection of other papers/chapters.
  • Copyright will remain with the authors.
  • The submission of a paper will imply that, if accepted for publication, it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in any language, without the consent of the Publisher.
  • It is the authors’ responsibility to obtain written permission to quote material that has appeared in another publication.
  • All submissions should be accompanied by a written declaration that the paper has not been submitted for consideration elsewhere.
  • The article contains no unlawful content.
  • There is no infringement of the copyright of others.
  • Each author agrees to referee at least three other works on comparable themes and of similar length within a twelve-month period of their publication.
